Wellness Education Groups

Wellness Education

In this weekly group we explore the tools to achieving a higher state of well-being. According to the American Medical Association, lifestyle accounts for 83% of a person’s over-all health. The A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Health Program addresses the primary factors, which determine ‘lifestyle’ (Air, Water, Eating Healthy, Sleep, Movement, Optimism and Energy). The group also covers a gamut of self-care related topics such as; “illness as messenger and the healing journey”, daring to re-open your heart and mind, techniques of thinking more optimistically, the art of self-acceptance, etc. Although there is a set format with a weekly plan, we tend to focus on the areas that people are most interested in and feel they will derive the most benefit from. The goals of wellness education are for you to:

  1. Feel empowered with the knowledge of what your body/mind can do and what it requires to function optimally.
  2. Gain a sense of mastery, joy and ease in implementing self-care strategies.
  3. Develop enthusiasm regarding your physical and mental capabilities.

Creating Life Balance

This group enables residents to incorporate more balance in life by learning and practicing self-structuring and time management skills. The ability to balance personal, social, and familial responsibilities with work and leisure can be challenging. This group will teach techniques for achieving that balance.

The group is conducted in a three part series every week. Thursday’s group teaches techniques for time management and helps residents build a structure for the upcoming Sunday. Sunday provides an opportunity to carry out the plan. The outcome is then processed in Tuesday’s group, identifying strengths as well as areas that may need more attention. Residents are encouraged to develop a structure that demonstrates increasing mastery of life balance as it relates to their work at the Retreat and at home.
