At the Retreat, we see and treat substance abuse as part of the whole picture of the individual resident, who may be suffering from other mental illnesses simultaneously.
Alcohol/Addiction Education Lecture Series
The Wednesday educational program is an extremely well-regarded series of lectures here at Sheppard Pratt. Eight topics are covered in an overview of the disease of addiction and recovery from it. Topics include Alcohol and Alcoholics, The Disease Concept, Signs and Symptoms, The Dynamics of Dependency, Recovery, Attitudes, Use Abuse Addiction, and The Family Illness. This lecture series is designed so that each meeting is independent of the others so that people may join in at any time. While attendance at these lectures is expected for those with substance abuse issues, residents who have had substance abuse touch their lives in other ways often find these helpful as well.
