Art Therapy

Artwork is a preverbal form of communication. Before there are words for the developing child, there are visual images. Some residents have no words for their experiences, or words are so fraught with other meanings or defensive functions that the emotions beneath them are obscured. The intent of art therapy is expression and awareness of thoughts and feelings through creating art that may be difficult to access through verbal processing alone. These thoughts and feelings can then be further processed in art therapy as well as other therapies in the patient’s treatment.

At the Retreat, residents have multiple opportunities to use art therapeutically – in twice weekly group sessions, in individual sessions with an art therapist, and in an instructional group that helps them develop their skills at using different artistic media. A spacious, dedicated art room on the Retreat is available to residents after hours to pursue additional artwork at their leisure.
