The Horse Inspired Growth and Learning Center provides Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) for residents of The Retreat. EAP incorporates horses experientially (no riding involved) for emotional growth & learning. It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the horses and residents to address treatment goals. Horses are sensitive to non-verbal communication and respond to what messages the residents give them in the moment. These responses give the resident and the treatment team information that brings awareness of current patterns and motivates change that can be applied to what is happening at home, work, school, or in relationships.
Residents learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses and then processing through the Socratic Method thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and patterns. Residents are engaged intellectually, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and/or physically. EAP activities are designed to create metaphors that can be applied to “real life”.
