Completion of a comprehensive, expert diagnostic assessment is a primary focus during the first two weeks of treatment. This is a time for pulling together and synthesizing the findings of the treatment team with the resident (patient) and planning for the remainder of the stay at the Retreat. The comprehensive Diagnostic and Treatment Planning Conference is held on or around the resident’s 14th treatment day. The conference is lead by the psychiatrist, and involves the resident’s treatment team, the medical director, and the resident. At times, the resident may decide to invite a member of his or her family to join the conference if desired. In more usual circumstances (and with the resident’s consent), the psychiatrist meets with the resident and family after the conference to go over the major findings and recommendations. The resident is provided with a written document that includes:
Each therapist summarizes their work with the resident. The conference is intended to be collaboration between the resident and their treatment team. Therefore, the resident is encouraged to give feedback throughout the conference.
Following the Diagnostic and Treatment Planning Conference, the psychiatrist and family therapist will meet with the resident and his or her family either in person or by telephone (with the resident’s explicit permission). The resident is given time to review the written document prior to the draft being finalized.
If a resident extends his or her stay for a time period that warrants it, the treatment team will conduct a Reevaluation Conference at 4 week intervals following the same format.
